The Value of Establishing Family Traditions

Think back to something your family did together each year when you were young—it brings a smile to your face, doesn’t it? Whether it was gathering in front of the TV to watch the one annual showing of a movie classic or going on a sleigh ride, events that are looked forward to again and again end up being some of the most treasured moments of our lives. But it seems nowadays, with our busy schedules, we need to work a bit harder at establishing them.

That’s why our family started a new holiday tradition this year—“Winter Wonderland.” However cliché the name, all of us—kids and adults alike—truly enjoyed ourselves. We selected one the night and gathered outside after decorating with lights, and enjoyed cocoa, cookies, Christmas music (via the iPhone of course!). We stayed cozy by laying out our warmest blankets in the yard and cuddling close together for our winter picnic. We sang carols and although we may have felt a little silly at the onset, we know for sure it’s something we all look forward to doing year after year. Here are a few ideas for starting a winter family tradition your kids will treasure:

? Select a recipe (dinner or dessert) and get loved ones together each year to make and enjoy it. Set the mood with music and be sure everyone is involved in some part of the preparing and cooking.

? Throw an annual themed party (think holiday sweaters, pajamas, whatever your family finds fun!)

? Select an outdoor activity you love to do (such as hiking, ice skating), pack up snacks and warm drinks, and enjoy!

Be sure to take pictures and even short videos of your fun each year as you and your children will love looking back at these wonderful moments.
